Terms

Last updated October 8, 2026

Equal Area is published by PaintedApp, LLC. It is free, it needs no account, and using it means accepting these terms. They are short because the page asks little of you and promises only what it can keep.

What the Page Is

The page draws the world in ten map projections, prints the distortion each one makes at any point, and lets you carry a country across the globe to compare its drawn size with its true area. It is a map for curiosity and teaching. It is not a survey, a navigation chart or an engineering tool.

Not for Decisions That Matter

Do not use the page to decide anything about navigation, property, boundaries, construction, or anyone’s safety. The Earth here is a sphere, not the ellipsoid surveyors use; the outlines are Natural Earth’s 1:110m, simplified for a whole-world view; and small countries are not in them. The page lists these limits under What It Misses. For any real decision, use survey-grade data and the professional responsible for it.

Boundaries and Names

Country outlines and names come from Natural Earth, which draws boundaries as they are held on the ground, including disputed ones. Showing them is not a statement by PaintedApp, LLC about any boundary, territory or name.

The Data and the Code

The outlines are Natural Earth’s, in the public domain. Snyder’s manuals, on which the formulas rest, are publications of the U.S. Geological Survey and also in the public domain. The page’s own code is published under the MIT licence. You may copy, print and share what the page shows, with or without credit.

No Warranty

The page is provided as it is, without any warranty, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. Every figure it prints is computed by the page and checked against published values, and the checks are listed on the page; even so, a figure can be wrong. To the fullest extent the law allows, PaintedApp, LLC is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of the page or reliance on what it shows.

Changes

These terms may change; the date at the top will change with them.
